REAL RESCUE REVIEW
ISSUE # 2
April 2002
Hello Friends and Supporters,
Hope everyone had a good winter and safe holidays! We at Real Rescue, Inc. had a
great winter and are looking forward to spring. All of the animals seemed to be
grateful for a warm home, good food, and the love of a family. We were too!
We have exciting news to share with everyone. Late last year we found and bought a beautiful 80 acre farm NE of Oklahoma City. We plan on developing it (depending partially upon the generous support of our friends) into a permanent sanctuary home for abused and abandoned animals. We continue to find good homes for many of the animals that come to us but there are many who can not be placed in homes due to physical or emotional difficulties. We are still in the planning stages but so far plan on kennels for the dogs, a large cat area, a protected cat area, a large (several acres)exercise area for dogs, and stalls and pastureland for horses. It is a beautiful piece of land with many trees and nice grassy areas for animals to run and play safely. Chris will move out there permanently in early summer and I'll follow at a later date. He'll
be building kennels, putting up fence, and genera1ly making it into a sanctuary so keep us in mind with any building materials, fencing, etc. that you might come across. We could probably use it.
Our PetSmart Adoption Week-ends (the 2nd Saturday of each month at the Petsmart at NW 6301 and May Avenue) continue with great success. We have found good, permanent, loving homes for many of our abandoned dogs that we rescued. We have also found homes for most of the kitties that were abandoned in the Midwest City Park and brought to us as week-old babies. We always need volunteers to help visit with people, show the animals, and screen for good homes. We are very careful when we place an animal because they have already survived the odds against them at least once. A prospective home must meet our standards for safety for the animal, appropriate family life for the age, type, and temperament of the pet and the adoptive family, agree to allow future home visits if necessary, and agree to return the animal to Real Rescue, Inc. if the placement does not work out. We have all of the necessary paperwork for the adoptions and have met some really wonderful people. Some of the people who have adopted a pet return the next month with their pet to visit us and tell us how happy they are with them. We LOVE this of course!!!! To see a sweet
dog or cat that was abandoned, sick, ~ or injured come prancing in happy,
healthy, and loved with their new family makes all of the work, money, time, and
effort worth it.
Before we close, a little bit of history borrowed from the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah newsletter. I don't think they would mind. Back in the 70' s more than 17 million homeless, abandoned dogs and cats were being put to death in shelter and humane societies around the United States each year. But now, due to all of the "No-Kill" rescue groups like ours (of which Best Friends is the flagship group), fewer than 5 million animals were killed in shelters. So, we are making progress in our fight to save sweet, intelligent, loving creatures from needless suffering and death. But there is still much to do.
Finally, our continued request for help in whatever form you can manage. We always need money for vet bills as we treat, vaccinate, spay/neuter, and test all the animals that we rescue and place. We are so happy to give you our new Post Office Box number in Arcadia, OK where we will get our mail for the farm. If you would like to send us a small contribution to help us offset our expenses please send to: P.O. Box 358, Arcadia, OK 73007. Thank you, thank you, thank you. ALSO if you would prefer you can donate directly to our Real Rescue, Inc. account at Wedgwood Veterinary Clinic, 5401 NW Expressway, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73116, telephone 848-3329. All of this money goes directly to the medical care of the rescued animals only (not any of our personal pets). Dr. and Mrs. Benham, Dr Lee and all of the wonderful staff at the clinic have been invaluable to us over the years and are wonderful contributors to our Rescue. We send our most heartfelt thanks to all of them.
Our "needs" list continues with kennels, blankets, toys, grooming supplies, and the ever needed volunteers to love and play with the animals. We also love visitors so when you have a little time, call and come see us.
Until next time,
Dana, Chris, and all the "family".
This newsletter is dedicated to "Walter Venters". a courageous and delightful Yorkie who brought many years of love and happiness to Chris and his family. He is the first loving pet buried in our Special Angels Pet Cemetery at the farm.
Many have forgotten this truth, but we must not forget it. We remain responsible, forever, for
what we have tamed. By Antoine de Saint-Exupery.
